Bowlers put England on top

England enforced the follow-on and reduced New Zealand to 177-5 on day three of the third Test at Trent Bridge.

James Anderson had to settle for a career-best seven rather than a perfect 10 in the first innings as the home side pressed for a comprehensive victory.

Anderson's hopes of a full house were dashed by new-ball partner Ryan Sidebottom while Stuart Broad later weighed in with wickets as New Zealand were bowled out for 123 before being asked to follow on.

Following a delayed resumption, New Zealand slumped from 96 for six.

They were thankful to Brendon McCullum second time around after sliding to 58 for three.

McCullum, playing as a specialist batsman, hit 71 before carving into his own stumps while Daniel Flynn contributed 49.

They are still 64 runs shy of making England bat again in this match, having been decimated by England's Lancashire paceman Anderson on day two.

The 25-year-old claimed the first half-dozen wickets to fall, and proved such a threat that matching the feats of Jim Laker and Anil Kumble in taking all 10 wickets in a Test innings appeared a possibility.

But left-armer Sidebottom struck shortly after the 1.40pm restart and Broad claimed two in an over before Anderson wrapped up the innings.

His spell today of 6.3-5-1-1 left him with overall figures of seven for 43, the best of his first-class career.

The ball zipped about viciously in the afternoon session, dominating bat to such an extent that 18 of the 27 runs scored came via extras.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori became the first victim when he flirted with a delivery outside off stump which flew off the edge to first slip.

Sidebottom struggled for consistency from the Radcliffe Road End, however, so England captain Michael Vaughan turned to Broad.

The change paid immediate dividends for Broad, 21, whose previous return in the series was just three wickets.

He added to that tally twice as Kyle Mills slashed a wide one to gully and Iain O'Brien was comprehensively bowled by a delivery which shaped away.

Fittingly, however, it was Anderson who wrapped things up in just the 47th over of the innings when a full delivery to Gareth Hopkins was adjudged by umpire Darrell Hair to be going on to hit leg stump.

Vaughan responded by asking the Kiwis to bat again, 241 runs in arrears and having to occupy a minimum of 60 overs to avoid a three-day defeat.

Edges accounted for openers Jamie How and Aaron Redmond while Ross Taylor became Broad's second victim of the innings when he wandered across his stumps to be leg before wicket.

After McCullum was bowled by Anderson, left-hander Flynn edged behind one short of a maiden Test half-century.
